Gerhart Johann Robert Hauptmann - German playwright and novelist, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1912, representative of the naturalistic trend in the theater.
At the end of the 19th century, representatives of the world of literature and art began to arrive in Szklarska Poręba, inspired by the Karkonosze Mountains. Following the European model, art colonies began to be established in Poland. The most famous towns were Zakopane and Kazimierz nad Wisłą, but Szklarska Poręba also became such a place.
In 1890, brothers Carl and Gerhart Hauptmann decided to live here. Years later, Gerhart Hauptmann, already a Nobel Prize winner in literature, recalled this event as follows: "One day, during a mountain hike, I saw this valley from high up [the Valley of the Seven Houses - P.W.] and I thought that it would be a good idea to build a house here. Delighted and dazzled by this idea, I went down through the forests, ran down the path among the meadows and within a few hours I arranged the purchase of a country house with adjacent land, a meadow, a beech grove and springs. I still remember the boundless joy of my wife and children when we considered this beautiful corner as our own and began to rebuild the old, crumbling cottage, which, transformed as best as possible, was to become our cozy home." [G. Hauptmann, pp. 15-16]
Hauptmann's most famous and important work is the play Die Weber (The Weavers) from 1892, describing the uprising of the Silesian weavers in 1844.
